The ford focus uses a belt driven water pump to circulate coolant a 50 50 mix of water and antifreeze through the engine as the coolant moves through the engine it absorbs heat generated by the combustion process heat coolant is released to the air in the radiator as air is pulled across its cooling fins . I have a 2000 ford focus that is overheating when i idle i have replaced the thermostat and its not the sensor because it shows my car is overheating the car wasnt overheating as long as i had the heat on 4 on the inside of the car but then the heat and a c quit working could this be the resistor or is it that the radiator needs flushed. I drive a 2015 ford focus with a manual transmission when the a c is on it was only blowing extremely hot air i realized the car was over heating which i thought was why it was accelerating slowly. Ford focus overheating repairpal will help you figure out whether its your coolant leak water pump radiator hose etc radiator fan thermostat or something else. My focus 16 is overheating temp gauge shows normal changed the t stat but still the same checked the coolant pump from t stat side and it seems to be turning on the inside of the engine but coolant does not seem to be circulating also the radiator hoses seem to be different temps top hose is hot bottom hose t stat side is barely warm
